My Steiner mercenaries are waiting for the arrival of a Griffin GRF-1S variant and a couple of Warrior H-7 Attack Helicopters. I am inordinately excited by this.

Been thinking of practical ways to include Phil's Robinson class Warship. I know you get paid a fortune for it, but it also costs a fortune, so really at the mo, all you're doing is moving numbers around. I really think that such a rare, powerful and expensive pice of equipment should get more recognition, as the question occurred as to why an employer would pay tens of millions extra for a resource that he's not using.
We will certainly have options of targeted orbital strikes etc, but thought I'd suggest something more permanent and tangible. Let me know what everyone thinks -
If you own a warship, you effectively blockade one hemisphere (either the zenith (north) or nadir (south), unless the opposition has it's own warship (incredibly unlikely)).
To reflect such overwhelming orbital superiority, the opposing forces can't use drop ships to ferry troops around without a high chance of getting blown out of the sky - this would have a direct effect on the defenders ability to react during a scenario. Additionally aerospace fighters leaving/entering atmosphere have a chance of being shot down (albeit much less so than a drop ship).
ALSO -
A large warship in orbit is likely to have an impact on shipping and trade, (either consciously controlling/interfering, or just intimidating merchants with their presence) and so any checks that the opposing force makes for the availability of replacement items suffers an additional +1, in addition to all other modifiers to reflect the additional complications.
That was it really - two points, one which impacts the actual game, and another which impacts after. Neither are huge, but could be decisive in a longer campaign, and add more flavour.
Other thoughts revolve around offering your own ground forces up to date satellite telemetry info on enemy ground movement, meaning that you always win initiative for the first turn and choose who moves first.
Or one free orbital strike each game.
Thoughts?

Mine is a transport ship I shall pay heed to the Arse conventions
I was expecting that there was some extra political baubles going on at the same time and my warship is there with someone of utter import (not really decided who) there's other mech commanders on board hitching a ride doing other drop ship stuff "locally"
Trying to think more sensibly I guess I would describe that as "a time-piracy" because that gives me a good excuse to wander neutral and foreign territory without making it a war footing but gives a good reason why I don't flatten every world from orbit.
[nb my money is also massive because there's such a difference between my fuel and my mech outgoings if I added a full ship it would be a lot more level I think but I had no intention of filling all of the dropship rings ...

I'd wish to have more than two docking rings on my jumpship As having two dropships with not a lot of wiggle room for extra stuff! Hay ho that's half the fun

I've got a Merchant (2 rings) for the DSR and and Invader (3 rings) for the DN, and only one dropship for each.
The Force Operations bit does have workings out for hiring extra dropships and jumpships short term, but otherwise I'm going to have to save up big time.
Of course, swiping a drop/jumpship can be a scenario in and of itself.
Now trying to finish the last 2 current units I need to paint, and then start on the reinforcements that are due.

Stu we need to sort last bit from our campaigne bash. I'm on holiday from Saturday to Friday next week if you are free day time if not an evening Ok mush, I'll see what I can swing. I generally only get one gamey day a week without catching flack from the missus, but will see if I can send her shopping or something.

Is there an easy way to see what is available in 3000? Does this era have a proper name? The era is called Geoffrey. Geoff to his friends. Or, if you're being pedantic - The latter part of the 3RD SUCCESSION WAR
if you want a quick reference, go to Master Unit List, click on Era, then whatever faction you want, and it'll give you a full run down of the units that faction had access to in that period. That doesn't take into account the back story/scarcity of certain units, but it's a good one-stop reference for all 'legal' units for the period.

It may or may not be evident, but one of the reasons I'm sticking up info about the timelines as they progress is to a) notify people when new technology becomes available, and b) give people some ideas for interesting missions, much the same way Chaz does with his historical bit each week.
I'm trying to avoid any whiff of 'gamesmasteriness' as I think it's more fun for the universe to be open to everyone's interpretations. However, as a slight nod to the interesting events that shape the Inner Sphere, I thought I'd put some of the political and social changes into rules terms (again, for people to take up or ignore as desired).
I won't lie - it's mainly because I'm a massive nerd and I get a kick out of going into the story.

Re: the Above
Backtrack slightly, but will be under the standard Timeline Change from now on. All changes will stay in effect until notified otherwise.
3001 Comstar begins supplying Bandit Kings
All missions taken by Pirates count as having 'Generous Employer'.
Forces taking up 'Pirate Hunting' missions will face a 20% higher BV than normal when fighting NCP pirates.
3002 Alessandro Steiner orders Operation Concentrated Weakness
The Lyran Commonwealth is paying well for 'Defensive Campaigns' along its border with the Free Worlds League. All such campigns are considered 'High Risk' (with all associated bonuses and penalties).
Tech Advance - Mechbuster Conventional Fighter Now available
Availibility rating is one band lower (i.e. easier) for Draconis Combine forces and mercenaries in their employ.

Added to the first page, but doubling up here as well -
ADDENDUM
If you're using the Maintenance and Repair rules from Strategic Operations, one 'cycle' has been changed from 8 hours to 3 months - to tie in with the existing minimum mission length.
