So, only visited Attack on the Saturday this year. A fun mix of games on show, especially liked Gary Mitchell's Battle of Half-way Island. WWII-ish carrier battle using Fighting Sail rules. Rules on his website for those that are interested. Had a chat with a couple of familiar faces who were playing the Black Ops rules. They reckon it's actually a very fun game, especially if you use the stealth rules, and convinced me to give it a second chance. I'm going to do it in 15mm to begin with as I've plenty of toys for both factions. 28mm comes later... Lots of toy soldier traders this year, not many people selling rules, though. This was a pain for Admiral Tim as we were searching for a copy of Black Ops for him. simonswars7 was in the FoW tournament as usual. I didn't stop long to chat as he was deep in thought. Possibly about how he was going to take out his Finnish opponent's Santa Claus stand and not get a lump of coal in his stocking this year! What did I buy? Well, a starter pack of ships for Fighting Sail from Mr TD. " Don't put flags on them and don't paint them as the Victory and you can use them for anything" was his advice. Also, some not-squats from Macrocosm to proxy as Deadzone Forge Fathers. Mr M used to work for GW and Mantic, faffing around with rules and stuff and has decided to go it alone and live the Good Life. The minis business is to pay for whatever they can't get living off the land. I kid you not. I can thoroughly recommend his minis. A very 'old school' look without being too comical. Persuaded Admiral Tim to part with some cash for some 'not cultist/gene-stealer' types that will double as Plague troops in Deadzone. Lastly, I actually bought some WWII figures. OK, it was the Panzerfaust starter set, but it's a start! French gnome cavalry riding giant snails, anyone???

I also went. Sunday only. First off - what's black ops?
I bought a bargain on the bring and buy. It was a jumbled box of German warlord sprues. Only turns out it wasn't. For £60 I got 5 250s (3 basic, 2 recce) 20 German paras/panzer grenadiers - undecided which with hmg and lmg teams. And a radio section. And it turns out a bad of plastic half made US Rangers. And 3 rubicon panzer 4s. I love it when a plan comes together.
Rounded that off with some odds and sod's of sentries and specials in odd bits around various stalls 28mm ww2)
Was very taken by secondthunders open combat game but as I have no game space but can paint I left it. For £30 I decided it could wait. Looks like a v good mix of saga, frost grave Mordheim, necromunda and bloodbowl in the rules but I couldn't justify £30 on a book I probably won't get to.
Someone was doing Halfprice warzone. Picked up 2 dark legion squad leaders for a fiver and across the dead earth rules for 7.50. Ignore the para above about games I won't play. It was cheap.
Saw the panzerfauste stuff and I have to be honest I've turned my nose up at the idea of it until I saw the models. I'm really taken with it. Sufficiently so that it was areal dilemma as to whether to buy their starter set. But I resisted and decided if not impulse buy that, took pictures of it and set my mind to make a decision by Newbury.
Bought "not cultists" from macrocosm. I've looked at those models before and resisted but damnit I want to finish my stealer cult and now GW have opened the door and I have masses from 20 (no 25??? Surely not!?!?!!!) years ago, why not? A quarter of a century in the buildup is fine.
Also took a look at the em4 models without my darling son distracting me. I'd always dismissed them as a bit gonky and lacking in detail. Glad I changed my mind. I had a hard time not buying more. They look amazing. And they have extras not on the shelf. That's a longer term project but basically if you remember a 1980s or 1990s film they've got a ripoff of it. So I've not got mad max. I've not got demolition man. I've not got Sandra bullock. And I've not got the USMC from aliens. I know stu has mentioned them lots but em4 continue to turn up gems.
And I bought paint.

Although I couldn't make Devises show I'm completely sold on that Panzerfauste game!

Not a lot of Bloodbowl but there is a turnover mechanic to keep things interesting. Overall I'd say it's a nice fun simple system. If you fancy trying it out some time let me know of a time when we can both arrange to be at the club and you can try it out. I've had the book for a while and I've only managed to get one game in so far but that was a fun one.

That was the bit that I recognised most and the battle dice results

What would be recognisable is that it's more about pushes and forcing people back than it is about actually doing damage. That's more interesting when objectives are involved and positioning is important.
