Finished! I haven't fixed the idea in my head just yet, but I'm toying with a neutral security force at the mo. I am slightly concerned the white bits on the mech look like a frilly bra, however.

So if i'm understanding the book correctly, the P that's used for 'Loss', Adv, Res sections is the true P value of each unit, not changed by discounts that a CHQ would bring, correct? E.g. My above P9 force actually works out to a value of P17, but I'd use standard P values for the units when deciding who gets removed, put into play straight away, and who gets put into reserve? Yes, so your CHQ choice can result in a bigger force but chances are you will not get to use it all, it does however give you greater flexibility.

I was wondering about that. So my current force (P9 modified, P17 unmodified) would remove P2 as the attacker, and I'd have another 5 points that I have to remove in order to have my P5 Adv and P5 Res

So it looks like a prostitute's frilly bra?
In other, non-boob related news, since Ironskar has such a heavily themed force of Colonial/WWI British, I've decided that the above are going to be Reisläufer - Swiss Mercenaries, soon to be joined by the Liechtenstein Free Militia - an all infantry force!

Finally, my first game of Horizon Wars! Short version - I got drubbed by a man in a Red Shirt. Learnt a lot though.
Interestingly, though it felt like the units in it were initially untouchable, they very quickly lost their tactical edge as they couldn't maneuver or return fire. It meant that there was a real reason for chipping away at that huge battletank to reduce it's effectiveness in future turns.
We missed loads of bits and messed up more, but definitely worthy of further exploration.

played 2 games -- thought it holds an interest, in plays refreshingly different from those games I can't mention but then I'm no fan boy of them anyway.
Although the man in the red shirt said we were doing something wrong -- I thought it was a good idea and should be kept (at least for those units on 2 or less defence dice)
Kind of a The Gods are with you rule -- we played it that the Defence die cancelled ALL dice of that value rather than as an oppose roll
so, borrowing rule book whilst thinking do I invest and if so what theme would I like to build a force around

Who said it was wrong -- apart from the man with the red shirt
All to do with dice foolery as explained in the edited post above
Ain't got that far in the book yet

...Who said it was wrong -- apart from the man with the red shirt.... ...and the rule book. ..and the example in the rulebook. Given that I accidentally won our first game without either side taking any significant damage, giving yourselves a bonus for defending seems like it'll drag out a game to maybe an hour or more. Ain't nobody got time fo' that! But hay (pun intended), horses for courses and all that. Wargames Rule #2 - you bought it, it's your game, do want you want, as long as Rule#1 is in effect!

as it was explained to me If you got 5 attack dice coming in and they all rolled eleven and you one defence die rolled an eleven.
per the book that's 4 points of damage making you toast
so if you only had one die - it is short, sharp, over
giggle if you heroically saved those 5 hits with that solitary defence dice what a hoot
what are the odds of 5 D12 rolling the same score?
apparently the answer is
(1/rn)(x + x2 + ... + xr)n. If n is larger than about 2, you'll probably want to do this on a computer.

As we found out last night, it takes a lot more than 5 hits to toast you. 5 hits will certainly cramp your style, but it's not game over by a long chalk. But then, we were throwing heavy tanks around the table....
*Insert witty one-liner here

Five damage to lighter stuff is very bad news! Also it's all dice rolled not on a one for one bases. Have a look at his video it helps a lot.

Not seen the video. Linky?
Lighter stuff + 5D incoming firepower = bad times + a bit of reality? A bit like a Challenger shooting at a Transit van???
Pretty sure the book gives a specific example where the F dice are something like a 3, 8, 8. and the D dice are a 6, 8. After resolving, the F dice left are a 3 & 8.... Also, the QRS on the FB page specifically states in the Shooting sequence that you "remove one die from the Fire roll for every exact match of the incoming roll"

Yep, as I read it, one matching defence die removes one attack die of the same value, not all die that have that value.

Me and a mate (yes, I do have one you bastards) have made up a setting whereby or respective forces (human) originate from the same planet and have evolved into the only two super powers remaining. There's now a galactic space race/colonisation going on, meaning we can fight against each other or indigenous/rival factions. He's gone for a type of elitist Technocracy whereby the scientists/computers rule. I've gone for a Romanesque collaboration of military elite with satellite levies/slave soldiers. Basically, whatever fluff you want to use is great for you (if any) but I'm going to be callously highjacking your troops to fit my internal monologue. Huzzah!

OK Mostly read da book and mostly followed it though. Can't recall being told how to swap around any stat values for conventional forces (page 64) but there was something about spending command points some where to increase stat values or was it buy abilities. My problem is I would like to do the bugs from Starship troopers - the warriors should have no F stat but extra A and M may even be P2 rather than P1, flying bugs could be Lt Cav Fire bugs Armoured art. Brian bug may need something special unless I missed it. These rules have the eternal problem of ignoring aliens and there is only a brief bit (page 113) about other worlds being a little different to Earth. Found DSM-130 on GZG site -- that is the grunts sorted but the rest of the army is going to take some tracking down. and there are some micro machines which would do if again one can find them I hope that there will be an expansion for non terra forces and worlds which would interest me rather than it just being Battletech not so lite did like this for a second force - but need to find smaller ones afterall what is the difference between drop pods and seed pods
