Something I'd always been interested in but daunted by the volume of it and the cost. Not how much it IS so much as how easily it could draw you into a spending spiral.

Something I'd always been interested in but daunted by the volume of it and the cost. Not how much it IS so much as how easily it could draw you into a spending spiral. Yh that was the first question i asked in store. Basically if you do "competitive play" you can kiss goodbye to cash FAST from what i gather. You can also lose money by trying to keep up with the latest rotation of what they call "blocks" (read, waves, seasons, tiers, etc), wich all companies try to do to keep you buyingl. I want to see what the draw is as apparently there is 20 million players of the game. The sealed booster and not releasing many of the "wanted" cards means people with the means , or the want, who need the cards for tournaments (tourneys seem to go on everywhere) really push teh price up of those "wanted" cards. I am just going to do the latest "block" wich is "oath of the gatekeeper" and try and build two decks with options, that way i can have two decks to play against each other, and maybe buy some that i like in the future, but i am definately not doing the tourney thing. Also i was told if i wanted to play instore and i just bought the basic, i would get destroyed in the store, so it seems other than "playing with mates" you DO NEED to buy cards on a regular basis to try and keep up with "race to war" I mean fair play to *Wizards for making a business out of playing cards that can sell to you over and over and over again, GW have been doing that for years with Space Marines. So i am going to "have a go" and get some decks together.

To add
I like to have everything and options within wargaming armies, i cannot do that with MTG as there is just sooo much of it to collect, apparently one of the "blocks" had over a thousand cards in the release,
They are also releasing more "blocks" a year i think.

Meh. Go onto Amazon.co.uk and buy an Intro starter set. Costs about £17 and gives you enough cards for around 4-5 decks. It comes with a random selection of booster packs too. Well worth the money. They bring one out each year, and I don't tend to buy any other cards but those.
I've never gone in for competitive play, but never felt hard done by when I've played against mates or people who do. My missus plays (lucky me!) and she kicked my arse with a random assortment against my honed decks of 2 decades. I've just got my father in law into it, and he's a PHD professor who's bought a lot of pricey rare cards, and I still beat him, more often than not.
I'm sure the serious money will get you an advantage, but a random box of whatever will let you stand up to almost any player, and then it's just down to practice!

just to round off - yeah, you can go nuts on it, but that's the case with any game. I've never had that issue because I don't like the pre-made decks that most of the blocks sell. It feels like I'm not the one winning if I use the deck that's been carefully put together by a tournament winning expert. Also, half the fun for me is taking a bunch of cards and whittling them down into something game-winning (which is why those intro boxes i mentioned are so good)
Also, the cards don't go out of date, like a new edition of 40k, for example. I've got decks that i put together when I was 11, and they still play well against modern decks today - no pricey rares, no extra boosts etc.
Also also - don't forget - other players will collect cards that they don't use. I've got about 60 decks, plus enough cards for another 30-40 decks that I've been juggling with for years. On top of that, I've got dozens (probably hundreds) of cards I have no intention of ever using (either because I've got too many duplicates or it's a theme/colour/block that doesn't interest me), so swapping can get you a lot without spending anything. TBH, some of the more common ones I'd probably let you have for free - as long as someone gets enjoyment out of them, I don't care.

p.s. wanna do the 15th of Feb? ME ? Sure Not me? Sorry, yeah you dude. I shall bring a tiny selection of decks from across the ages for you to play against (or with, if you like) to get a feel. Honestly - it's a great game, and one that kept pulling me back in (without spending any more money) for the past 20+ years.

I play themes - I like any army/group etc to have a clear story, so I actually scupper my own decks by refusing to use cards that would not fit the theme. Cool cool. I'll get to travel light for a change!

I used to have hundreds, probably thousands, of 4th edition cards. When I realised how much of a cash cow 5th ed was going to be I stopped collecting them. Sold off my 4th ed hoard to a lad who used to come to the Bridge House. You know the one, Andy Tutton's protege (not his son, the other one who was his son's friend).

I have heard about the need to keep buying and buying (forums online, games reviews etc), but unless the people I've played with are all equally god damn amazing or equally awful, I can use any of my decks from 3rd edition to the current (admittedly the really old stuff sometimes struggles, but that only makes the victories all the sweeter!). Seems like some of you have had more competitive play than I have, so will bow to your experience.
The only issues I've ever had are when a block brings out a new super weapon, (Darksteel - where everything is Indestructible, or Poison - every creature infects everything else), but they are usually confined to thatspecific block, which is fine as it leads to a different style of play - it's only when you use one of those decks on a different block that things go tits up, but that's the extreme exception. I've played Ravnika vs Mirrodin, or Kamigawa vs Zendikar etc and they all play fine. I'll be interested to play against some of you to see if you can highlight the deficiencies in the older decks.
