toying with the idea of buying another game that I don't have time to play.
What factions does everyone
a) have b) recommend
i'd like to play with one no-one else has if poss.
on a seperate note, any suggestions for the best sites to buy miniatures from? I've seen the plastic saxon and viking boxes for £20? Can you make full armies out of these two?

You only need a couple of dozen minis for Saga, and anything with chainmail/sword/spear/shield will do, hence High Elves playing Welsh rebels and the off Viking warband posing as Anglo-Danes make smi-regular appearances on a club night. Hal would be the one to talk to as he's been playing the Crescent & Cross version recently, which is apparently a) very good and b) a virtual version 1.1 of the rules. DW

Cool, cheers. What do you mean virtual 1.1 version? As in, it includes all the rules plus the most up to date amendments?

Saga runs on a 4 or 6 point rules system. A saga force is a warlord + points option. Each point lets you have 4 elite, 8 bog standard or 12 dross
The various units give you orders dice (dross don't give orders but the ithers do. You roll the dice and that then let's you allocate orders and actions to your units.
With dark ages the various factions are pretty similar so you can get away with mixing the models.
The plastics are ok but wargames factory are the shallow end of quality (with perry being top drawer but I don't think they've got dark ages)
I've got models to do that I've picked up off bring and buys. West wind dark ages filled out my band.
Foundry probably make the nicest models.

Cheers guys. Have just bought the soundtrack to the TV series 'Vikings' and have been playing it loudly in my car for inspiration. PHIL - I admit that the plastic minis weren't amazing, but didn't look that different from the metal ones produced by the same company? Was thinking if buying the Dark Ages and the Viking factions of This and then mixing and matching to make Anglo Saxon and Viking armies. The Normans and Byzantines look pretty cool too, and could be used in the Crusades. then again, so could the Saxons and Vikings as Varangians. hmmmmmm.....

I think gripping beast are mid range. Not as detailed as malifaux or prodos but much more ability to convert.
If you want Normans you can't beat ebob for value metal If you want crusades try footsore miniatures
If you go for those Vikings/Saxons they are nicer than the wargames factory ones in my opinion. Try Amazon first. If you're in no hurry and can get to the Newbury show (colours) on 12th??? You might get a bargain

I have Anglo Danes & Vikings. I could probably field them as Anglo Saxons too but, for some reason, I just like the way the Anglo Dane board plays better.

Hmmm. Wargames Factory offer greater diversity in a single box set, but suspect you may be right - don't think they're quite as good quality.
Have downloaded the rule book plus the Northern & Raven expansions. Anglos Saxon history is why I got into history in the first place, but not sure I like the mass unit aproach they favour.
Have found sites to download special dice pictures, and will buy blank dice to stick them on (I'm fucked if I'm paying £12 for a pack of dice for each faction). I'm picking up that the Battleboard is really where the armies change, but don't know enough to form an opinion yet.
If anyone can offer a summation of what each army is like/ how it plays/what's it like to play against, it would ne helpful.

Stu You are allowed to try before you buy. Hal, I and many others could give you a game. Figures - I upcycle Lord of the Rings figures. Rohan are very good proxies but I keep it simple, the guys are WYSIWYG. Some will tell you that Crusader Miniatures have some good stuff, esp Normans.

Ok. Toss up between getting 84 GPB mniatures (Dark Age and Saxon boxes for diversity, though actually going for Anglo forces) in the link above which are a) dirt cheap, b) the 'approved' saga range, and c) get shed loads of them. Issues I can see are a) limited poses b) limited weapon choices (no bows, for example) c) limited unit assignations (i.e. Some have armour, some don't, meaning the same pose, with the same armour, would probably go into the same unit to be a hearthguard or whatever) OR Hammer of the Gods. And buying a mix of armoured Saxons and unarmoured saxons (64 in all) Which are a) much more flexible with regards to poses b) have a wide range of weapons (including bows and double handed axes) but you do a) get 20 less men for the same price (a significant number - could have 2 big armies with the first option) quality looks the same either way. Thoughts/ experience?

My thought is there's no right answer. Better to make a decision and just go for it.
I think if you take out a subscription with one of the wargames mags (wargames illustrated I think) they give you a free box of plastics)
If you go wargames factory (hammer of gods) you should be able to get 2 for 30 at a show
And my mate bought some gripping beast ones, made some up, hated them and sold the models and spares on eBay for more than the box...

Cheers for the input. After exhaustive research, I've plumped for Gripping Beast. The stupid lego hands of the HoG minis was bugging me too much. I also read that they're not as defined. Game on....

...that would have been an excellent idea....but no. I bought the Saxon Thegns for Warlord, Hearthguard and Warrior duty, and Dark Age Warriors for Levys.
Because that's a truck load of models I won't need in one warband, I'll use the unarmoured Dark Age warriors as levys for other warbands - poss Normans who I haave a hankering for. 84 models will give me a lot of choice!

Anglo-Dane Warlord and Hearthguard assembled! Rather pleased with the simple weapon swap to make it look like one of the axemen has his weapon slung over his shoulder. They're not quite proper Dane Axes, but close enough for me.

Blank dice have arrived. Symbols printed. Once I've put tem together, I'll just need the battle boards and I'll be ready to go.
I'm putting together the Anglo-Danes with a view to using them as Saxons at a later date.
Just need to figure out who the second force will be. May try to convert (i.e. Stick extra things to) some models to be vikings.

If that is £22 for 15 or 16 figures the price is good - I know you provide your own spears.
Figures metal or I guess plastic?

Yes £22 for 15/16 or buy 3 and they become £20 per pack.
Metals. I know! A little gem my friend linked to me this morning.
There are 2 Saxon packs. 2 Viking packs. 2 Arthurian packs.

Question:
If your Levys can take slings, bows or javelins (for example). Does that mean your purchase of 12 Levys with one point must all have the same weapon, or can you get 12 Levys and then split them off with 3 groups of 4 with each of the above?

I thought you used them as 1 group and chose armament (personally I'd do a mix...)

Cool. Thanks for the clarity. Just working out how to arm the models for the best combination as I'm putting them together.
It seems like Levys are not that favoured, and when the are used, they're left in large units.
