Had a brief look at the preview sampler on WGV. A couple of things turned me off of this: The dice mechanic used is for D6, but then the designer details how to roll a further D6 for target number from 7-10 required due to die roll modifiers.... Why not just use a D10? The excuse that crusty old 'proper' wargamers don't like pointy many-shaped dice won't cut it. Neither does the excuse that D6s are readily available and the others aren't. Pointy many-sided dice have been readily available since the 1970-s. That's just lazy game design coupled with a poor understanding of maths and statistical outcomes. Secondly, while the first five pages does not contain any detail on time-scale, it can be assumed that in modern naval warfare there are long periods of stalking your enemy followed by a (very) short period of sinking him before he sinks you. Harpoon and Shipwreck deal with this by having variable turn lengths. The designer states that none of the ships have weapon arcs because they can be assumed to be able to manoeuvre to bring them to bear in the time scale of the engagement. Believe you me, getting your weapons to bear is EVERYTHING once the shooting starts, should be key to how you fight your ship and certainly shouldn't be abstracted in a modern naval game. Nice spot chillatbmth and appreciate the share, but ultimately it gets a thumbs down from me... DW
