Not trying to be too pro about it but what is the scale? Is a base a regiment? My French hussars were painted a rather dashing sky blue as the 5th hussars. I don't want to paint up 4 bases of hussars as the 5th to find I've done the 5th 4 times over. I pick French hussars as the example as they have some lovely colours to pick from...

So I've sprayed my purchases. There's 10 units of infantry but I don't like them. I've ordered a grenadier pack and a voltigeurs pack so they will look right. I've got som Ros skirmishing voltigeurs coming too. 4 bases s of cuirassiers and 4 bases of dragoons 2 units chasseur a and 2 of hussars. 4 artillery. 9 generals but I've ordered more from Ros so I can make pretty bases...
All ready to go. When the elite companies arrive I'll have 12 bases of infantry but 1 may have had it's eagle stolen...
Planning on treating a pair of bases as a "regiment" so 2 bases of 7th hussars; 2 bases of 5th chasseurs etc.., Oh also ordered a pack of lancers.

where is da nemesis when you need a knowledgeable comment? madphil101 -- you plans sound good. When I get around to doing French I may follow your example, but I will keep the line and light battalions of British separate so that it mixes in with what I've already painted.

As to regiment size I've sussed my answer as "it depends" with the rule set being the defining factor .

As to regiment size I've sussed my answer as "it depends" with the rule set being the defining factor . Yes, that would have been my reply to the question also. If we were doing 28mm, then unit and size would have been quite strict depending once again upon ruleset, but there do seem to be rulesets also that share the same (ish) basing system, i.e 12 cav 24 or 36 foot etc. In 6mm, specific units are alot less important as it all gets somewhat lost on the table, i know when ive painted stuff it looks really nice, but once on the tble , from 3 plus feet away, they all look the same. Obviously im not talking about armies on the whole, btu more the slight differences between units. So my advice (oooh sagely) is to paint what you like and how you like, if you wish to follow specific unit colours ad that is what you enjoy, then crack-on, if you just want to paint for the feel of the army (as im doing) then fill-ya-boots. In 6mm its the base size, and amount of bases and we seem to all be doing the same 60x30 basing, what you put on the base is upto you, 9 cav, 24 foot (as discussed before) etc. If you wish to put 48 foot on a base, it will look mighty impressive, but will not make any difference in the game, but it will push army price up , but you will have much Kudos EDIT: But whichever ruleset we ending up using(but thats not cast in stone ofc), the baccus army packs seem to be imbalanced ans quite heavy on cavalry. We have found that on teh basic baccus army pack, more infantry is required.

I'm doing 9 horse or 24 foot but the infantry strips with the units don't have bearskins or proper plumes... I'm trying to duplicate my 28mm units so I'm being just a tad mental on it... That kind of pretty should look cool though and that is the key.

That kind of pretty should look cool though and that is the key. What ever floats thy boat matey its all good When the "Napoleonic" thing was started, it was "designed" (design as well as sagley advice ) so that anybody cold join in, wether they liked research, or painting or converting or whatever, so whatever you do will be ok, wether you paint like Perfect-six painting, or light and dip like me (or get them painted ) . or Cram so many figd on a base that there is no green, or stick one man on a base and call it a brigade. The rough parameters of basing are the guide (and only for ease of play) everything else is up to the individual

Would you like me to VACATE the room, or EVACUATE it? Need to know as it makes all the difference as to whether I have the baked bean and boiled egg curry tonight or not...
