Just bought enough for two separate mats. One surface is shiney the other side is mat. Can I use my modelling paint to decorate it or do I need a specialist paint.

Might be better off with stickers for planets It all depends on the size you want and if you want them removable so to use the terrain for other things. Real sized planets would just be a side of the map but even moons etc would be the same size in xwing. so asteroids and other bodies would work. For Full Thrust or Battlefleet Gothic they are more in keeping with what i would normally use so stickers small half spheres or even ex chrimbo dec's would work sprayed up in the right colours.... must find my full thrust stuff for star wars now!

This one is very similar to my cloth that you have used Paul. Mine is flick painted for the spots and the cloud has a shape of card to blank out the stars and a light dusting of the spray can to give the effect. My cloth is huge btw at roughly 8 foot square! This is your flick type (obviously this printed) with highlight on brighter stars and very light dusting of white for the clouding this is very doable paint wise. Rinse and repeat but with bright colours! Now this could be produced but painting skills need to be well very good and this will take time. These last two are from FFG and are brilliant mats but need very good skills to produce and quiet frankly id buy theirs
